Location: BETH SHALOM and on zoom

Our speaker will be quilt historian and appraiser, Dale Drake.

Quilt top finished in the 1930’s

Over time Dale has made nearly every mistake possible with taking care of old quilts, and will share her hard-earned knowledge at the July 11 presentation, "Taking Care of Grandma's Quilts." The best methods of use and display, storage and cleaning will all be discussed. Dale has a small collection of quilts made by her paternal grandmother "and the aunts", and will bring some of these along with others from her collection of vintage and antique quilts.

Bring your quilts to share! Many members think our show and tell is the best part of the guild meeting. Don’t be shy about sharing. We want to celebrate your first quilt, your new experiment even if it didn’t quite work, your small art quilt or table topper as well as your most recent complex quilt.

We will also be celebrating the two years of Karen Levay’s presidency.

July Workshop - “Taking Care of grandma’s Quilts”

Dale Drake will provide a half day work shop on July 12, 2024. The workshop is limited to 12 participants. Each participant may bring up to 3 quilts for Dale to discuss. For more information and to register see the workshop page.

AugusT Lecture and WORKSHOP

Our August 1, 2023 speaker, Karen Hampton, a fiber artist from Evansville Indiana will present a lecture: Techniques Trunk Show. Want to learn a new technique to add to your skills for your next quilt? With this large trunk show, you can learn about design, sewing, embellishment, and surface design techniques that you can play with on your next quilt. Her website https://hamptonartstudios.com

Karen will also have a workshop on August 2, 2023 titled Improvisation Piecing Workshop. You will learn an easy way to free form curve piece. You will be stacking and cutting freehand curves using quarter-circles, and machine piecing without patterns, pins, or matching seams. Give yourself permission to play. Sign-up information soon!

Bonus Sew-in Afternoon at the Monroe County Convention Center

Mark your calendars for a quilting afternoon on Wednesday, July 12 at the Monroe County Convention Center. The workshop by Dale Drake is scheduled for the morning only and since we have the Convention Center room for the whole day, we have an opportunity to get together for an afternoon sew day. Come join Guild friends for some summer sewing from 1 pm to around 5:30 pm.

The Bloomington Quilters Guild had a presence at the “Arts Fair on the Square” event on June 24, 2023. We talked to interested visitors, gave out 110 informational fliers, and handed out some coloring sheets for kids. Thank you to Monica Jensen who organized and spent most of the day at the fair. Thank you to Anne Marie Hammond for loaning her family’s canopy. Thank you to Penn Jensen, Ginny and Randy Kopper, and Zolt and Karen Levay for helping with set-up and tear down. A big thank you to the following quilters who represented the guild during this hot day: Ginny Kopper, Marita Stone, Brenda Julovich, Abby Seifers, Laurie Eynon, Sandy Bonsib, Monica Jensen, and Karen Levay.

Fall Retreat

YES! We can start to register for the Fall Retreat! The chosen venue is the Waycross Camp and Conference Center. This is a lovely setting for a retreat. Our fall retreat chair, Jo Ann Sporleder, led the the group to venture away from Clifty Falls this year for a number of reasons. Jo Ann and several other guild members have attended retreats at Waycross, and recommend it highly. Why change? Here are some reasons Jo Ann shared with the board:

  • Really good food - different every meal. Chef will prepare gluten free, vegetarian and vegan meals.

  • Coffee, Iced Tea and Ice water available 24/7 both in the dining hall and in the sewing room

  • We have a large area to put our snacks. Last year Clifty Inn did not allow outside food.

  • High Speed internet - No TV.

  • Nice family room to gather to relax, play cards, work on a puzzle, or have a glass of wine with friends. (you must bring your own wine).

  • No stairs to get to dining hall, or to the building to sew.

  • Every day you will be outside for a bit of fresh air walking to/from sewing, eating & sleeping.

See the fall retreat page for more information.
