Deb Geyer

OUR Next MEETING is ON Tuesday, MAY 2
Speaker: Deb Geyer
Lecture: Fabrics in the U.S.: 1750’s to 1950’s
Time: 6:00 PM Social Time
6:30 pm Meeting start
Location: BETH SHALOM and on zoom

Our speaker for the May meeting will be Deb Geyer. She is the Executive Director of the Quilters Hall of Fame in Marion, IN. Her lecture will be ‘Fabrics in the U.S.: 1750’s to 1950’s’.

The fabrics available to us today have a huge impact on our clothes and the quilts we make. So it was in the past. This presentation looks at the fabrics from Colonial days to the 1950s and answers some of those pressing questions you may have. Where did the term "chintzy" come from? How do you pronounce "toile?" What did kids think of wearing feed sack underwear? Learn more about the Quilters Hall of Fame.

Don’t forget to come to the social time at 6pm, just before the meeting. It will be a great time to catch up with other members!

The Volunteer of the Year Award highlights a Guild member who has had a positive impact on furthering the mission of the Guild, raised public awareness of the Guild, and has promoted the needs of the members of the Guild. The winner will receive a $50 gift certificate.

Send your nomination along with a description of the person’s contributions to vice-pres@bloomingtonquiltersguild.org by May 5, 2023. Voting will take place online in May. The winner will be announced at the June meeting.

Remember to include the nominee’s name and briefly describe the person’s valuable contributions.

Time to Return Raffle Quilt Tickets

It's getting closer to our Raffle Quilt drawing—drum roll— on Tuesday, June 6, 2023 at our regularly scheduled meeting (Beth Shalom, 6:30pm).  This means...time to turn your Raffle Ticket stubs in, along with those dollar bills or checks. Come to our next meeting and stuff those ticket stubs in the RQ box.

who wants to create our next Raffle Quilt?

It’s time to plan for the 2024 Raffle Quilt! It can be bed size or a throw. How about an art quilt? We could raffle two smaller pieces, increasing the chance of winning one of two drawings! Get those quilty juices flowing! In addition, the Guild still needs volunteers to coordinate and promote the raffle.

A new bee is in the works - crazy quilt bee

Some members who attended the tour of Wylie House were inspired to try making a crazy quilt and are forming a bee focused on crazy quilts. When starting a new skill or technique, it is nice to have friends for support and collaboration! If you are interested in joining this group, please email  president@bloomingtonquiltersguild.org or sign up with our beekeeper Tonya Humbard at the Guild meeting. Tonya will be available during the social hour to gather names of anyone who is interested in joining or starting a bee. Once we know who is interested, we will set up an organizational meeting to establish how the bee will operate.  The group will stay open for people to join as they are ready to participate.

Next Saturday Sew-in Day, May 13

Mark your calendar for the next Sew-in Day on May 13, 2023, from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm. The location is St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 100 N St Rd 46, Bloomington, IN 47408. The cost is $5, which we need in cash or a check, payable that day. This money will offset the charge for the facility.

We are asking for help with set up and tear down. The church is allowing us to use the space because some church/guild members will be there assuming responsibility for making sure the room is clean, vacuumed, and ready for Sunday morning. As usual no food and drink with red or purple dyes and no nuts. Please contact Legene White at vice-pres@bloomingtonquiltersguild.org if you have questions.

Orphan Blocks Available - Have you ever tried creating a quilt from 'orphan' blocks?  If you would like to experiment with them, Ginny Kopper will have miscellaneous donated blocks available at the Sew-in Day for you to make a donation quilt.  Thirteen quilts made from orphan blocks have been donated so far, and we still have blocks left to make more!

NEED A RIDE TO MEETINGS OR EVENTS? LET US KNOW!

Do you dislike driving at night? Would you prefer to carpool to meetings and events? If you sometimes need a ride to participate, let us know! Email your name, address, and general location to president@bloomingtonquiltersguid.org or talk to Karen Levay or Legene White. With your permission, we'll announce it at a meeting and in At A Glance to give members a chance to partner so more members can participate in meetings, workshops, and Sew-Ins.

Request for a ride

RJ Trubitt, a longtime Guild member, needs a ride in order to attend meetings and events. She lives near Deer Park Manor, between Hillside and High Streets. If you could help, please phone RJ at the number provided in the directory. She doesn't use email or texts but will cheerfully answer your call!

Wrap the World with Quilts

From Janice Arvesen - I will be taking a humanitarian trip to Poland with a group called, Wrap the World with Quilts, May 24-June 3, 2023. (https://hellocottons.com) We will be teaching Ukrainian women in refugee camps how to quilt and make easy sewing projects, which the women can use or sell in local markets.

We’ve been asked to bring as many finished quilts as possible. My focus is on twin size or smaller for boys or babies, and enough to squeeze into 2-3 suitcases/bags!

Interested in making a quilt but not sure what to make? I have fabric, fabric and more fabric! It’s all been donated from generous BQG members and others for the purpose of helping the Ukrainian people. I’m having a fabric open house this Friday, April 28 from 2:00 - 5:00 and Saturday, April 29 from 10:00 - 1:00 at my house. Please come!

If you have a finished quilt top and need it quilted let me know as we have folks who’ve volunteered to quilt them.

Please turn in all quilt tops by May 10th and finished quilts by May 20th. Feel free to reach out with questions, comments, or to obtain my address. Thanks for all the kind, generous souls helping the Ukrainian people. Janice Arvesen, jarvesen@bloomingtonquiltersguild.org.
