JuLY Meeting

Photo taken from Jaimie Davis’ website.

Come to the July meeting to see Jaimie Davis, from Oregon via Zoom. Picture America headed for the civil war and discover how the industrial revolution, the struggle over slavery and the social and moral climate of the time contributed to this beautiful art form.  Through stories, explore how the demise of Baltimore Album quilts leads us into the hearts and minds of the women who made them.  Find out how a pregnancy, a Christmas gift and a quilt class gone horribly wrong help to explain the mystery behind why these quilts disappeared almost overnight. It’s a funny, provocative and insightful look into some of America’s most beautiful treasures.

Registration for Fall Retreat is OPEN!

The BQG fall retreat returns to the Waycross Camp and Conference Center, from Oct 31 - Nov 3, 2024! The timing could not be better as we will all be inspired by the quilt show earlier in October! The pricing remains the same as last year. Online registration closes Sep.13, 2024. You must have paid your membership dues to attend the retreat.

As with last year, there is a price savings if you pay by check or in person at the June, July or September meetings. For more information see the Fall Retreat webpage and/or download two related PDF files: the retreat flyer and mail-in registration. The address is:

Bloomington Quilters Guild

You may want to combine the money for your dues and fall retreat registration together! Please make sure you annotate completely so our treasurer, Cathy O’Bryan, knows where to allocate it in the books.

Winter 2025 retreats

The 2025 winter retreat will be held at McCormick’s Creek January 30, 31, February 1, and 2. We will use the same format as this past retreat. Pay one price for access to the sewing room for the entire weekend. You are resposible for meals and lodging. Day Sewers are welcome!!!

Community Quilts

Thank you to those who donated their time, fabric, and stitches to the Community Quilts Program.  During April, May, and June we collected twenty-four beauties for distribution. The breakdown was fourteen to Susie’s Place, and ten to The Villages.  The Middle Way Bee collected seventeen quilts and the New Hope for Families bee collected ten quilts bringing our June total to fifty-one and our total for the year 484!!!! To see where they all went check the community quilts web page. Pictures of some of the quilts collected in June are in this gallery!

As always, each facility was so appreciative.  In our rotation of these gifts we could use some quilts that are lap size (around 50 x 65 inches) for nursing home and hospice recipients. Smaller quilts are still always welcome and needed as well.

We want to thank Jane Pitt for not only quilting many of the community quilts but also organizing batting purchases distributed to several of the community quilt quilters. Jane has used Hobbs batting for many years, but they are changing some of their policies. They will provide a nice discount for charity quilts, but are requiring 5 UPC symbols for each roll of batting. If you use Hobbs batting, please cut out your UPC symbols and give them to Jane so we can take advantage of this cost saving.

Thank you again for contributing!

June Meeting Summary

The June meeting was filled with social fun, awards and quilts!

Each year guild members are issued a challenge of a theme to be completed and presented at the June meeting. The challenge is chosen by the previous year’s winner. This year the challenge was “Sampler”. Each person had to make a quilting project that included at least 6 different blocks. Congratulations to Jane Pitt, Maria Schmidt, and Betsy Birch on their top three finishes! Jane will announce the next challenge at the September meeting. The winners all received gift certificates as prizes.

Karen Levay was “crowned” volunteer of the year at the June Meeting. Janice Arvesen won this year’s raffle quilt!

Jane Pitt - 1st place

Maria Schmidt - 2nd place

Betsy Birch -3rd place

Quilts from the Heartland - IT IS TIME TO SUBMIT A QUILT AND SIGN UP TO VOLUNTEER FOR THE SHOW!

Our quilt show is only THREE months away and a lot of work is under way. Now it is time for the general membership to step up and contribute! There are several ways you can help out!

  1. Donate any quilting related fabric, notions, tools, patterns and books to the Treasure Shop for resale. Donations will be accepted at the July and September meetings. Additionally, you may schedule a drop off or a pick of donations by emailing treasure@bloomingtonquiltersguild.org or calling Ginny Kopper or Becky Green (see membership directory for their contact information). A BIG “Thank You” to those who have given their time and donations so far!

  2. Contribute to the Basket Drive. You can donate a basket or items to go into the basket! See Raffle Basket details in article below.

  3. We will augment the show revenue by selling ads in the program. We need volunteers to help sell ads to local businesses. Businesses that advertised in the last program reported customers mentioned seeing ads in the program. Download the form.

  4. Volunteer to help publicize the quilt. Maybe you can take some bookmarks to a quilt shop, post flyers, or suggest online resources for advertising our show. The week before the show, help put out yard signs and then collect them after the show.

  5. Volunteer to work at the show. There is a sign-up genius sign-up form here. The job descriptions will be updated and possibly some positions may be added in the next week.

  6. Enter your quilt(s). Our guild show is an opportunity for you to share your work with no judge or jury. Just as our guild is for all quilters of all levels of experience and all types of quilts, so is our show. We welcome all quilts in the show from all skill levels. Examples of all quilting styles are also welcomed: Hand or machine, “big stitch, traditional, custom or edge to edge.  There is a prize for the best hand quilted entry.More information is on the quilt entry webpage.

Please contact co-chairs Karen Levay and Sandy Bonsib to volunteer by sending email to quiltshow@bloomingtonquiltersguild.org.

You can find much more information on the quilt show webpages. The top link www.bloomingtonquiltersguild.org/quilt-show-2024

Are you interested in responding to requests?

The Guild regularly receives requests from people who want an old quilt refurbished, or blocks put together, or machine/hand quilting of a keepsake, etc. Sometimes they are prepared to pay for these services, sometimes they are hoping for mostly a favor. If you are interested in considering these tasks to earn some cash or help preserve someone's memories, let Legene know what you'd be willing to do so she can make a referral. Email Legene at president@bloomingtonquiltersguild.org.
REMINDERS:

• Don’t forget your name tag at the next in-person meeting!
• Bring used rotary blades to any in-person meeting for recycling.
